Ride of Attrition

June 21 - 22, 2025

Yates Family Orchard, Hinesburg, Vermont

One of a kind - a “last one standing” format cycling event.

About

The true essence of this Ride of Attrition lies in the participants, where each rider is on a personal journey, chasing their own unique goals and relishing the social camaraderie of the race.

HOW IT WORKS:

  • Riders will line up at the start/finish line every hour on the hour.
  • Riders must complete one 7.4 mile lap within the hour. Any time left of that hour can be spent fueling, resting and preparing for the next hour, the next lap.  If you have a support crew, this is the time to connect with them. There is unlimited support once you complete your lap and are in the Pit Stop Zone
  • This will continue until there is one rider left who is able to complete one final lap within one hour. This will be the winner

Can you cycle 7.4 miles in an hour? Probably.

Could you do it again the following hour? Quite possibly.

How about the hour after that? The legs might be feeling it by now.

What if you had to do it every hour for 24 hours on the hour, eek, longer?

Welcome to The Ride of Attrition, a grueling endurance cycling event set as “the last one standing wins”.  This format tests the limits of one's physical and mental stamina. The ride takes place on a pristine yet challenging course featuring a few punchy climbs, a covered bridge that crosses a creek where you can wash your sorrows away, 99.99% dirt roads and unpredictable New England weather conditions.

Participants face a landscape where every mile pushes them closer to their breaking point. Unlike traditional races, the goal of The Ride of Attrition isn’t to be the fastest—it's about survival. Riders continue until they can’t, with only the toughest making it to the finish. Along the way, cyclists drop out one by one, whether due to exhaustion, mechanical failures or sheer inability to continue. As the hours progress, the field thins and the remaining riders must dig deep to endure.

The event tests perseverance and endurance, where strategy, pacing, and mental fortitude are key. Finishing the ride is a victory in itself, and the one who lasts the longest is hailed as a champion of resilience.

No matter how far you make it, you will push your limits.

RULES: Here's a comprehensive guide to the rules and important details you need to know.

  • It's crucial to understand that the time taken to complete a lap is not the focus. What matters is that you return to the Start/Finish area before the hour is up.
  • Once you are back at the Start/Finish and assuming you have finished within the hour, you may use the bathroom, eat, drink, sleep, ponder life and this event, and decide whether you want to saddle up to take on the next lap.
  • After completing one lap, all riders are considered 'tied.' Speed is not a factor in this event; it's all about the duration.
  • Riders will continue until ONE rider completes a FINAL lap. (If two riders are left and one does not complete the lap, then the one who completed the lap will be declared the one left standing, aka The Winner.)
  • No e-bikes of any type are allowed
  • All riders must be in the starting corral before the top of the hour
  • You will get a 3-minute, 2-minute, and 1-minute warning for the next lap
  • Failure to line up in the starting corral will result in disqualification of the rider
  • Participants must start a new lap at the sound of the bell starting the lap
  • Absolutely NO late starts will be allowed
  • Once on the course, you are not allowed any outside aid
  • Eliminated riders are not permitted back on course
  • Leaving the course is not permitted
  • Riders are responsible for their own mechanical needs
  • No pacers whatsoever
  • A GPS Computer is required to log your laps
  • There is no winner if no rider can complete one more lap than anyone else
